Robert Downey Jr. is set to make a dramatic return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), but not as Iron Man. Instead, he will take on the role of the iconic villain Victor Von Doom in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige confirmed that the decision had been planned for years, highlighting Downey’s deep connection to the franchise. “He is ingrained in the fabric of the MCU… He played the most iconic hero. Let’s have him play the most iconic villain,” Feige said.

Downey originally exited the MCU in Avengers: Endgame, where Iron Man sacrificed himself in a defining moment. However, the introduction of the multiverse concept has opened the door for new interpretations and unexpected returns.

Directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, who are returning to helm the project, hinted at the creative depth of the character. They noted that Doctor Doom’s immense power allows for exploration of both his strengths and vulnerabilities.

The film is expected to bring together a wide range of Marvel characters. Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers, alongside Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Paul Rudd as Ant-Man. The new Fantastic Four will be led by Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards.

Legacy X-Men characters will also appear, including Ian McKellen as Magneto and Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier. Newer MCU stars such as Letitia Wright and Florence Pugh are also part of the cast.

Set for release on December 18, 2026, the film promises a major multiverse showdown, redefining Marvel’s storytelling by bringing its most iconic hero back as its greatest villain.
